The Basque Country currently has 1,054 hotel establishments and 13,034 restaurants. While the number of hotel establishments has increased in recent years (+12% since 2008), there has been an 8 % fall in the number of restaurants.
By type, the greatest increases have been registered in establishments that provide prepared meals for events (+21.3 %), as well as in tourist accommodation, and other types of short-term accommodation (+13.8 %).
We must note the presence of 14 operators exclusively dedicated to providing meals to communities, which employed more than 11,000 people in 2015 with a turnover of about 220 million Euros, providing 268,000 meals a day.
On the whole, HORECA establishments constitute one of the main sources of out-of-home consumption of food and beverages, which has seen a reduction in recent years as a result of the economic recession, both in the Basque Country and in all other Autonomous Communities. In particular, families have reduced non-essential expenditure, such as eating out, and the tendency to save has increased.
