Distribution and Marketing

The economic activities involved in the marketing and distribution of food and beverages to households and other establishments in the Basque Country include the wholesale trade of food products, beverages and tobacco, retail sales in non-specialized establishments (predominantly food products, beverages and tobacco), and the retail trade of food products, beverages and tobacco in specialized establishments.

In addition, these include other activities such as those related to intermediaries in food products, beverages and tobacco or the retail trade of food products, beverages and tobacco in stalls and flea markets.

More specifically, among businesses, we can highlight those linked to the retail trade of food products, beverages and tobacco in specialized establishments that, with more than 7,000 establishments represent 43 % of the total number of establishments in the Basque Country, and 26 % of the employment generated, followed by the retail trade of food products, beverages and tobacco in non-specialized establishments, which represent 17 % of the establishments (2,870 in 2013) and the largest number of jobs generated (44.5 % of the total).

Most partners of the Food Cluster involved in the marketing and distribution of food and beverages fall under retail activities in non-specialized establishments, with a predominance in food products, beverages and tobacco, and other companies with establishments, such as supermarkets, hypermarkets and superstores. More specifically, there are 1,204 companies of this type in the Basque Country (4.5 % more than in 2011), with a greater concentration in Bizkaia.
